Problem: The existing living area was proving impractical in the home as it was too small. As a result this was limiting the use of the existing space and adjoining spaces but also wasn’t taking advantage of the northerly aspect or providing a connection to the garden. The existing home is located in a beautiful country settling but lacked the character and personality.

Design Brief: Design a small yet practical extension to the home to maximise the internal space, connect to the garden, provide character to the existing facade and bring lots of natural light into the space.

Solution: We have extend the existing living area towards the north to enlarge the space (additional 20 square meters internally and 40 square meters externally). By providing a larger timber framed glass sliding door to draw the garden into the home, creating a greater sense of space internally but also maximising the sunlight and outlook. A gable roof creates a generous covered entertaining area with the increased ceiling height it allows additional light into the living area, creates a greater sense of space, allows an extra living space but provides an extra dimension to the dwelling facade.

Client Testimonial: 'Rebecca immediately understood what we were trying to achieve with the addition. The primary reason for engaging Rebecca for this addition was to ensure that the sun did not encroach on the entertainment area in summer but did in winter. Although not a large addition, it has open up the home and take advantage of its perfect northerly aspect, which has so far proved successful. Apart from the obvious increase and better use of living space the design also transformed a dullish rectangular box into a house with a greater degree of architectural appeal. We are both very happy with the end result. Thank you.'
